We are a student run media workshop and radio that blends local and national voices. Bringing communities together through the fusion of art, music and culture, we aim to be the taste-makers of today.

In 1936, WBRU’s founders David Borst and George Abraham strung thousands of feet of wires from dorm room to dorm room to relay recorded music, jumpstarting what would be the first college radio station and later the premier radio station in Southern New England. In 1970, Vincent Thomas began the first programming on WBRU intended for the Black community in Providence, starting the WBRU 360° Black Experience In Sound. Affectionately known as 360°, the Sunday hip-hop, R&B, old school, and gospel programming on WBRU became iconic in Providence and broader Southern New England. The only radio station to do so, WBRU was named the best mid-sized market radio station in the country three years in a row by Rolling Stone and hosted some of the biggest up-and-coming bands and artists in the industry. In 2017, WBRU sold the license for 95.5 FM and the alternative rock of WBRU transitioned to an online 24/7 stream with more focus on indie music. WBRU360 expanded to 24/7 and is on air on 101.1 FM in Providence Sunday-Tuesday. WBRU has expanded its offerings in digital media, with online content designed to put young adult voices front-and-center. Our artist interviews, articles, live sessions, the the indie and 360 radio streams endeavor to bring the music fans closer to the artists they know and love — and those they don’t yet know they love. We continue Borst, Abraham, and Thomas’s mission to build communities through audio.
