The Wrap-Up brings you the 5 largest music news stories of the week as well as information about new album and music video releases. This week: Coldplay’s kaleidoscopic trip to California, a favorite returns to the studio after 2 years, chart-topping WBRU artists, and Fall Out Boy turning into dolls.

twenty one pilots score their first Top 10 Hit

This week, twenty one pilots notched their first top-ten single on the Billboard Hot 100, as BRU favorite “Stressed Out” shot to number 9. Voted WBRU listeners’ favorite track of 2015 (Click here to see the full list!), the song rose to national fame in December! Congratulations on the hit, twenty one pilots; we can’t call you indie anymore, but we love you just the same.

Coldplay release "Birds" video, and it’s vaguely trippy

On January 2, Coldplay released the music video for “Birds,” a single from their latest album, A Head Full of Dreams. As always, Coldplay likes to give us creative videos (remember their “Adventure of a Lifetime” vid, where the band members were dancing gorillas?), and this one is no different; in it, the band romps around on Salvation Mountain, a California hillside painted with colorful messages about Jesus and topped with a giant cross. With its vintage film style, brightly hued backdrop, and kaleidoscopic, overlapping shots of band members and nature, the video definitely has a sixties-acid-trip feel—but in an artsy, rather than a creepy, way. Keep ‘em coming, Coldplay!

Linkin Park are recording new music

Great news for Linkin Park fans: new songs are in the works! On January 5, the rock band posted a photo to Facebook of a band member singing in a recording studio, with the caption, “Back to work this week.” We here at WBRU can’t wait to hear what comes out of their sessions!

Walk the Moon, Halsey, Grimes among artists honored in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Music list

On January 4, Forbes released its annual 30 Under 30 Music list, which highlights young trailblazers in the music industry, and three BRU favorites were among the honorees! Walk the Moon, Halsey, and Grimes were all celebrated for their accomplishments, and rightly so—they make some kick-butt music. Here’s to killer tunes thus far from these artists, and lots more to come!

Fall Out Boy channel NSYNC in video for “Irresistible,” ft. Demi Lovato

Fall Out Boy just released a new video, and it’s definitely out of the box. Like, Fall Out Boy dressed like Ken dolls come to life out of the box. The fun, quirky vid pays homage to the video for NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me” (cue myriad of “It’s gonna be May” references), and it’s pretty spot-on. Directed by Wayne Isham, the director of the original NSYNC vid, the “Irresistible” video tells the story of “toys no one really wanted [to] come to life,” according to a band statement, and is for “everyone that has ever loved an offbrand dollar bin toy, or has felt like one.” The throwback clip even features a cameo from NSYNC baritone Joey Fatone. What more could you want?
