Triangle Forest, Llove & DirtyDirty at AS200, June 14th

Posted by Travis @ 2:33 pm on June 16, 2008

set-e-305-s.jpgTriangle Forest took over AS220 this past Saturday for an impressive performance that rivaled the best local shows I’ve seen. DirtyDirty opened the show with a short set highlighted by a charismatic cover of “These Boots Were Made for Walking.” Llove took the stage next, with fewer electronica instruments than their last show, but a larger crowd. The played an awesome set, with guitar shredding and all, but managed to break even more of their equipment; they claimed that this would be their last show with all of their gear, and that, from now on, “it’ll be just [us] with and iPod and a flashlight.” Triangle Forest performed last, bringing with them an intense energy that pumped the crowd up into a dancing fervor. Lead singer Brendan Britton also provided one of my favorite quotes of the night, explaining that it seemed like a good idea to “masturbate your hangover away” in a photo booth somewhere… not that he’d ever done such a thing. I’m pretty confident I missed the exact context of the quote, but I think it works better that way. Triangle Forest even pulled together an encore, their only song in a major key, said to “blow your f***ing minds” by Brendan. It was an incredible show. Silversun Pickups and our 38th Birthday Month!

img_0878.jpg Between a poignantly awkward stage presence, a willingness to push a few songs to their sonic limits, and the hottest red shoes I’ve ever seen on a bassist, Silversun Pickups rocked Lupos on Wednesday (11/28). In fact, with the unlikely but awesome combo of Triangle Forest and Steel Train as the opening acts, this may go down as one of the best shows in Providence this year.

Taking it from the top, anyone who thinks they’re familiar with the Providence music scene and hasn’t experienced the mind-to-ass blowing beats of Triangle Forest should be pointed out and laughed at. Triangle Forest is a pretty good studio band that proves its pure sonic power time and time again when you see them live. It amazes me every time I see them that two guys and a girl, essentially working just with Casio Keyboards and an electronic drum kit, can produce such an amazing sound. My personal favorites from the night were Rockagon, Robot Sings for the Master, and their closing track, Ice Crystals. Before last night, I had never heard of Steel Train, the second opener. However, that being said, I was pleasantly surprised. In a style that lends itself to comparison with bands like Live, Collective Soul, and even an early U2, Steel Train definitely kept the crowd going after Triangle Forest. And who can argue with a band if Dj Travis feels the need to wear their pink band t-shirt… Read More
