Chvrches – Recover [EP]
Born and bred in Scotland, the music of the lush synthpop group, Chvrches, has been abuzz in the UK music publication scene, where they garnered fifth place in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list. After great success with the two singles, “The Mother We Share” and “Lies,” Chvrches has recently released its latest extended play, Recover EP. On first listen, Chvrches’ new single, “Recover,” sounds soothingly similar to the coos and beats of Purity Ring’s debut Shrines and other recent synthpop-inflected manifestations of witch house. On “Recover,” Lauren Mayberry – the frontlady and occassional synthesist of the group – gives a bubbly, sugarcoated performance: she croons, “And if I recover, will you be my comfort?” Her voice is laced with a dynamic synth beat, which is accompanied by stop-timed beats and echoing vocal samples on repeat. Influenced by many production techniques seen prominently in the witch house genre, Chvrches seems like an upbeat twin of such acts as Holy Other, oOoOO, and Salem. Unfortunately, the two other accompanying songs “Zvvl,” “Now is Not the Time,” and “Recover [Cid Rim Remix]” fail to capture the same vibrancy and technical diversity of the eponymous title track.
